India has been elected to the United Nations Statistical Commission for a term of four years, marking a significant achievement. India received an overwhelming majority of 46 out of 53 votes, surpassing competitors South Korea (23), China (19), and the UAE (15), according to reports. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar congratulated Team @IndiaUNNewYork on Twitter for their impressive win, highlighting India's expertise in statistics, diversity, and demography that contributed to the country earning a seat on the UN Statistical Commission.
The Commission is responsible for setting statistical standards, developing concepts and methods, and implementing them at the national and international levels. It is one of the highest decision-making bodies for international statistical activities. Established in 1947, the United Nations Statistical Commission consists of Chief Statisticians from member states worldwide, with 24 member countries of the United Nations elected based on equitable geographical distribution.
The Commission has five members from African States, four from Asia-Pacific States, four from Eastern European States, four from Latin American and Caribbean States, and seven members from Western European and other States. India, Argentina, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Ukraine, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the United States of America have been elected by acclamation for a four-year term starting on January 1, 2024.
