To increase renewable generation to meet rising power demand, India approved its largest hydropower project—the Dibang Multipurpose Project (MPP)—on Tuesday in the mountainous northeastern region bordering China. National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited will develop the project, according to the news agency Bloomberg.
The project, known as the Dibang Multipurpose Project, will be located in the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh and will have a capacity of 2,880 megawatts. The project is expected to provide a significant boost to India's energy production, particularly in the northeastern region, which has traditionally been underserved by power infrastructure.
However, the project has also been controversial due to its location near the China border, which has raised concerns about the potential impact on regional security and the environment. China has previously expressed concerns about India's plans to develop hydropower projects in the region, citing concerns about their impact on downstream water flows.
Despite these concerns, the Indian government has moved ahead with the project, citing its potential benefits for the local economy and energy security. The project is expected to take several years to complete, and its construction will likely be closely monitored by both Indian and international observers.
