Maharashtra, September 29, 2025 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and several other districts in Maharashtra, including Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Nashik ghats, and Pune ghats, warning residents and authorities of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds expected today and tomorrow. The warning follows days of persistent heavy rain across the state, causing concern for urban flooding, landslides, and waterlogging in many areas.
Mumbai has already recorded one of its wettest September seasons in recent years, receiving over 3,000mm of rain this monsoon, significantly above the average. The city faced heavy showers even on Sunday, with some areas experiencing rainfall above 100mm within hours. The severe weather has led to disruptions in daily life, including school closures in Palghar and Mumbai, and advisories against unnecessary travel and taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
The Maharashtra government and local authorities have mobilised relief and rescue teams, and district control rooms are active round the clock to monitor situations such as rising water levels in rivers and the risk of landslides in the ghat areas. Citizens have been urged to stay indoors, avoid flood-prone roads and bridges, and follow official instructions carefully. Structural safety assessments and readiness to repair power and road infrastructure are ongoing.
This red alert underlines the challenge that Mumbai and its neighbouring districts face every monsoon season as intense rainfall overwhelms urban drainage and natural terrain. While the rains are vital for replenishing water resources, the current intensity also risks lives, property, and daily functioning. The situation demands a balance between preparation, caution, and community cooperation.
The IMD forecasts that the heavy rains will continue at least until September 30, with the low-pressure system influencing weather patterns expected to shift westwards soon. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for possible further disruptions or emergencies.
In summary, while the rains nourish the environment, this red alert is a reminder to be cautious amid the looming threat of floods and landslides. Awareness and adherence to safety measures remain crucial to minimise harm to life and property during this severe weather phase.
This alert comes as a significant episode in Maharashtra’s monsoon narrative, highlighting the need for sustained improvement in urban planning and disaster preparedness to better withstand such extreme weather events in the future.
