Historic milestone: Shaliza Dhami, first woman to command IAF Day parade

In a historic moment for the Indian defence forces, Group Captain Shaliza Dhami is set to make history by leading the Indian Air Force (IAF) parade at Bamrauli Air Force Station in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, today. This marks the 91st anniversary of the IAF, and it's the first time that a woman officer will command the Air Force Day parade.

Earlier this year, Group Captain Shaliza Dhami achieved another milestone by becoming the first woman officer to assume a command position in the frontline IAF combat, where she currently leads India's western sector missile squadron. With over 2800 hours of flying experience and a qualification as a flying instructor, her journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

The IAF has been actively promoting gender equality, with women now commissioned as fighter pilots, serving on warships, and eligible for permanent commissions. They receive training at the National Defense Academy and have been given opportunities to join specialized units such as the Garud commando force and Marine Commandos in the IAF and Navy, respectively. This year's Air Force Day parade will also feature a flight of Garud commandos for the first time.

The parade itself will be a spectacle, featuring around 110 aircraft, including MiG-21 fighter jets, C-295 transport planes, Rafales, Sukhoi-30s, Mirage-2000s, MiG-29s, Jaguars, LCA Tejas, C-17s, C-130Js, IL-76s, AN-32s, Chinooks, Apaches, and Hawks.

In addition to the parade, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, the IAF chief, will unveil a modified ensign at Prayagraj. This updated ensign features a crest on the top right corner, replacing the national flag that was previously in the upper left canton. The crest showcases an Ashoka lion and a Himalayan eagle spread below the lion, symbolizing the strength and prowess of the Indian Air Force.

This significant moment was made known by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the commissioning ceremony of the aircraft carrier Vikrant, highlighting the continuous evolution and progress of the Indian Air Force.
