Heavy rain, lightning strikes Jharkhand, claiming 8 lives

Heavy rains and lightning strikes in Jharkhand have taken a toll, claiming at least eight lives in the past 24 hours, with one fatality in Ranchi, according to officials on October 2.

Jharkhand has been drenched in continuous downpours since Saturday evening, resulting in damage to bridges, diversions, and tragic loss of lives.

In Ranchi's Lalpur area, a 28-year-old man named Dev Prasad, known as Chotu, tragically fell into an overflowing drain during the heavy rain on Sunday. His lifeless body was discovered approximately 2.5 kilometers downstream from the incident site on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, in Jamtara district, a woman and her three children, aged between one-and-a-half years and seven years, lost their lives in a lightning strike on Sunday. This unfortunate incident occurred in Chandadih Lakhanpur, as confirmed by the police.

In Bokaro district, a child met a tragic end when a mud house's wall collapsed due to the heavy rainfall. Additionally, two young girls, aged nine and 12, drowned in a pond in Palamu district.

The relentless rain has also taken a toll on infrastructure, washing away diversions and culverts. Notably, a diversion on NH-39 in Ranchi's Ratu area was swept away by the incessant rain, affecting traffic along the Ranchi-Daltonganj route. Water levels in several rivers across the state have risen dangerously.

Although the intensity of rain in the state capital, Ranchi, has diminished, the weather department has issued an orange alert for parts of Lohardaga, Gumla, and Simdega, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on Monday.

Abhishek Anand, the head of the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, noted that widespread rainfall continues to persist across Jharkhand due to a low-pressure system. Parts of the state may continue to experience rainfall until October 4.
