Love getting your hair washed by your stylist, huh? Did you ever think that getting a hair wash at your go-to salon could be fatal? Well, nor did she.
A woman from Hyderabad had to be rushed to the hospital, after getting a stroke while getting a hair wash at a salon. The lesser known ‘Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome’ can be fatal and needs immediate attention to ensure the patient survives. The woman experienced dizziness and nausea along with certain imbalances. The doctors who are treating her said that though these strokes are normal she has a thinner than the normal vertebral artery, which leads to slow blood supply to the brain.
What actually happens in a stroke is that a part of the brain doesn't receive enough oxygen and the body part that is under the control of the brain suffers damage. According to doctors what happens in beauty parlour syndrome is that there is hypertension of the neck when our head is turned backwards, during the hair wash and a part of the oxygen circulation gets altered. Individuals who have narrow arteries in the neck have warning signs like dizziness.
For individuals with narrow arteries in the neck that supply oxygen to the posterior part of the brain, there are warning signs - dizziness, imbalance, visual blurring often indicate the hyperextension of the neck. If that happens, a person must show a neurologist immediately to avoid any untoward situations.
Doctors have also said that in case of this situation, awareness is very important. The best way to prevent beauty parlour stroke syndrome is to avoid hyperextension of the neck altogether or for a long period of time and make sure you have effective neck support.
Well, remember your body tells you when it is uncomfortable. listen to it and react at the right time to save yourself any unforeseen trouble.
