Tucked away in the heart of the enchanting Kutch district of Gujarat lies Dhordo village, a place that's now firmly in the global spotlight. This hidden gem recently achieved an extraordinary feat by earning its place on the coveted list of the "54 Best Tourism Villages" curated by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
The thrilling announcement was made at the G20's Tourism Working Group Meeting, which unfolded during India's presidency. This prestigious recognition stands as a testament to Dhordo's dedication to preserving its landscapes, celebrating cultural diversity, upholding local values, and preserving culinary traditions.
But the applause doesn't stop there. The UNWTO also welcomed 20 additional villages into its esteemed "Upgrade Programme," elevating the grand total to 74 villages now seamlessly integrated into the UNWTO Best Tourism Villages Network. This exciting news arrived as the UNWTO General Assembly convened in the picturesque city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, emphasized the importance of equitable benefits, affirming that this initiative acknowledges villages that have harnessed tourism as a potent catalyst for their development and overall well-being.
All about Dhordo:
Dhordo isn't just another village etched into the UNWTO's roll of honour; it's a vibrant destination pulsating with life and allure. Nestled in the vast expanse of the Great Rann of Kutch, Dhordo is renowned for playing host to the annual Rann Utsav, a cultural fiesta that immerses visitors in the rich tapestry of the region's traditional art, music, and crafts. Against the backdrop of the mesmerizing Rann of Kutch, this festival becomes a captivating journey into the heart of local culture.
The village's charm extends well beyond the festival. Dhordo showcases breathtaking landscapes that seemingly stretch into infinity. The vast white salt desert is a must-see wonder, where visitors can embark on camel safaris or thrilling jeep rides. Picture-perfect sunsets and starry nights make this experience feel like a journey to another world.
For nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, Dhordo delivers a spectacle as various bird species, including flamingos, cranes, and pelicans, migrate through the region, transforming it into an avian paradise.
Furthermore, Dhordo boasts a treasure trove of authentic handicrafts and textiles. The village is celebrated for its exquisite handcrafted items, including embroidered textiles, copper bells, hand-painted fabric (Rogan), and intricate lacquer art on wood.
Last but certainly not least, the "Best Tourism Villages Network" serves as a dynamic platform for sharing experiences, best practices, and invaluable insights among its members. It's a welcoming stage that invites contributions from experts and public and private sector partners who are committed to harnessing tourism as a catalyst for rural development.
As we look forward to the fourth edition of recognizing more rural destinations, the call for submissions is set to resonate in the early months of 2024.
