In an unfortunate incident, a grenade was thrown from a motorbike towards the residence of Manipur minister Yumnam Khemchand in Imphal West. Fortunately, the explosive hit an electricity pole near the main gate, resulting in injuries to a young woman from the BJP politician's extended family and a CRPF sentry.
Dinesh Chandra Das, a CRPF sentry from the F30 Battalion, unfortunately sustained a splinter wound to his right hand. Purnilesha Yumnam, a relative of the minister, also suffered an injury to her left foot. Witnesses reported that two unidentified individuals wearing full-mask helmets on a motorbike were responsible for the attack and swiftly departed from the scene.
CM N Biren Singh immediately visited Singjamei Yumnam Leikai upon receiving news of the 10 p.m. blast. He strongly denounced the incident as a "cowardly and uncivilized act" and expressed his sincere hope that the motive behind it would be revealed once the culprits were captured. The Imphal and Singjamei police stations promptly reacted to the attack, with IGP (Imphal Range) Temthing Ngasangva arriving shortly afterwards.
Minister Khemchand, who is responsible for rural development and panchayati raj, expressed his astonishment at being singled out, mentioning that he has no known opponents. In an act of protest against the assault, the local inhabitants held a peaceful demonstration on Sunday. Yambem Shantibala, one of the demonstrators, pointed out that considering the high population density of Singjamei Yumnam Leikai, the consequences could have been much worse.
