Government plans for a 1700-Km frontier highway to keep an eye on China's seamless movement

The "frontier highway" will pass within 20 kilometers of an international border on occasion. The road transport ministry will develop the 1,748 km long, two-lane roadway. The NH-913 route will greatly facilitate the movement of defense troops and equipment to the border, where China has made numerous incursion attempts.

The government will construct a new highway in Arunachal Pradesh within the next five years that will be close to the borders with Tibet, China, Myanmar, and India. The "frontier highway" will occasionally pass within 20 kilometers of an international border. The road transport ministry will construct the 1,748 km long, two-lane road, which has significant strategic value and aims to halt migration from border areas. The Center has recently notified the longest NH all at once, making this one unique. The NH-913 road will greatly facilitate the movement of defense forces and equipment to the border, where China has made numerous incursion attempts. On its side of the LAC, China is allegedly building infrastructure.

The closest location on the India-Tibet border is Monigong, which is where the highway will begin in Bomdila and travel through Nafra, Huri, and Monigong. The road will end at Vijaynagar, close to the India-Myanmar border, after passing through Jido and Chenquenty, which are the closest cities to the China border. There are nine packages that make up the entire stretch. Although Nitin Gadkari, the minister of road transport, had stated that the project would cost about Rs 27,000 crore, the government is now looking into ways to lower the cost. The three roads will be connected by six interstate lanes that are both vertical and diagonal, adding up to 2,178 km, allowing for quicker access to border regions.

As part of its project "empowered committee on border infrastructure," the government recommended conducting surveys and producing reports on the border regions in 2016. This project was carried out in cooperation with the defence ministry, state governments, and the Department of Border Management. 2018 saw the centre designate the corridor in Arunachal Pradesh as a national thoroughfare. (NH). After a road is designated as an NH, construction is the responsibility of the transport ministry.

"Due to the lack of any existing roads along these stretches, nearly 800 km of the corridor will be greenfield. There will also be a few tunnels and bridges. Since it typically takes two years to complete construction, we have outlined a plan to complete the sanctioning of all works in 2024–2025. As we move forward, various packages will be finished, and the project as a whole is anticipated to be finished by 2026–2027 "a government representative said.

The Arunachal Frontier Highway, according to sources, will give the military a significant capability boost by facilitating the smoother and quicker movement of troops and equipment to the border as needed for induction and de-induction. The majority of the highway projects, totaling Rs 1.6 lakh crore, or Rs 44,000 crore, announced by the Centre for the Northeast earlier this month went to Arunachal Pradesh.
