After the Nirbhaya gang rape case in 2012, the government started a fund called Nirbhaya Fund, as an initiative to protect and improve the security and safety of women in India. Nirbhaya, which means fearless, is the name given to the rape victim to protect her identity.
In the tenth meeting of the committee, which took place in November 2022, it was decided to provide 115.37 crores to the Nirbhaya fund.
In a scheme to give a boost to women's safety and security measures in Mumbai, the Maharashtra Government has approved to provide for disbursement of Rs115.37 crore for technology, capacity building, awareness, and outreach under the Mumbai City Women's Security Initiative Scheme (Nirbhaya).
In 2019, the contribution of the central and state government had a 60:40 ratio. The central government had approved Rs.252 crores.
Therefore, a stronger committee was created to implement the initiative under the Nirbhaya scheme. The funds will be used to strengthen the Nirbhaya cell and the Nirbhaya vehicles squad that has been active since last year.
