The recently inaugurated Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway in Karnataka has come under scrutiny once again due to waterlogging in certain areas of the 118-kilometer road. Despite being built at a cost of Rs 8,480 crore to reduce travel time between the two cities from three hours to 75 minutes, commuters were disappointed after a brief spell of rain in the Bengaluru-Ramanagara region resulted in several waterlogged spots on the expressway.
A resident of Ramnagar highlighted the severity of the waterlogging, citing an incident where a car got stuck in the middle of the expressway, and a lorry collided with it from behind. Another person reported that their vehicle was submerged in water, forcing them to turn off the engine.
A commuter recounted that multiple accidents occurred as soon as water started filling the underbridge, with a series of bumper-to-bumper collisions involving seven to eight vehicles following their own accident.
In summary, the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway's waterlogging issues during a minor spell of rain have raised concerns and caused accidents, frustrating commuters who had hoped for a smoother and more efficient travel experience.
Opposition leaders have alleged that the decision to inaugurate the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway was taken hastily due to the impending elections. Congress' DK Suresh expressed his concerns by stating that the expressway had become a nightmare for commuters and that the waterlogging has caused significant distress in Ramanagara and Mandya Districts.
As per the Public Works Department officials, there are still some incomplete tasks left on the service road between the Bengaluru and Nidaghatta stretch. However, five bypasses between Bengaluru and Mysuru have already been made available to the public. These bypasses include a 7km Srirangapatna bypass, a 10km Mandya bypass, a 7km Bidadi bypass, a 22km bypass for Ramanagara and Channapatna, and a 7km bypass for Maddur.
