Foxconn, a key supplier for Apple, is making significant strides in India with major projects in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. These initiatives reflect successful models seen in China and Vietnam, marking substantial industrial development within the country.
Tamil Nadu's Groundbreaking Industrial Housing Initiative
Housing for Foxconn Workers
The Tamil Nadu government is set to provide housing for 18,720 women employed by Foxconn. This pioneering project, located at Vallam Vadagal near Chennai, is the first of its kind in India, where the state government has constructed and will maintain a hostel specifically for a private firm.
Inauguration by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin
Chief Minister M. K. Stalin will inaugurate the 20-acre housing complex on Saturday. Foxconn Chairman Young Liu will also be in attendance. This development aligns with Apple's broader strategy to establish residential accommodations for 78,000 people, with Tamil Nadu receiving the largest share of 58,000 units.
Key Features of the Housing Complex
• Accommodation: 13 blocks, 10 stories each, with 24 rooms per floor.
• Capacity: Each room houses six employees.
• Amenities: potable water, stormwater drainage, solid waste management, rainwater harvesting, and solar energy use.
• Security: 1,170 CCTV cameras.
• Recreation: spaces for recreational activities, a dining area for 4,000 people, and a commercial area with a shopping complex.
Financial aspects and management
The housing project, costing ₹706.5 crore, is funded through loans and contributions, including ₹37.44 crore from the central government’s affordable housing scheme. The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) will manage the facility, aiming to boost productivity by situating housing closer to the workplace.
SIPCOT's managing director, K Senthil Raj, remarked, “SIPCOT aims to offer a safe, comfortable, and peaceful environment for industrial workers. By situating housing closer to the workplace, we hope to boost productivity while giving employees more personal time after work.”
Future Plans
In order to develop this idea further, SIPCOT and Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Fund Management Corporation (TNIFMC) have formed Tamil Nadu Industrial Housing Private Limited (TNIHPL), a special purpose vehicle. The objective of this effort is to offer the state's industrial workforce sustainable, affordable housing options.
Foxconn’s Karnataka Unit: The Second Largest After China
Major investment in Karnataka
Foxconn, part of the Taiwanese Hon Hai Technology Group, is set to establish a manufacturing plant near Doddaballapur, Karnataka, with an investment of ₹25,000 crore. This unit will become the second-largest Foxconn plant globally, following their facility in China.
Support from the Karnataka Government
During a meeting with Foxconn’s CEO and chairman, Young Liu, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured full support from the state government.
"The Karnataka government will extend full support to Foxconn. We will provide everything from water, electricity, and roads to legal assistance," the Chief Minister said.
Employment Opportunities
Young Liu highlighted that the Karnataka unit will create 40,000 direct jobs, mainly for middle-level educated individuals. He expressed optimism about future investments in other sectors, contingent on mutual trust. Liu stated,
“The unit in Karnataka will soon become the second-largest Foxconn plant after China’s unit. It will create 40,000 direct jobs, especially for middle-level educated individuals.” He added, “If there is mutual trust, anything can be achieved...and our investment will not stop here. In the future, we plan to explore other sectors also.”
Progress on Projects
Industries Minister M.B. Patil noted that various state agencies are dedicated to ensuring the smooth implementation of Foxconn’s projects. "State agencies such as KIADB, KPTCL, the Fire Brigade, and pollution control board are working with dedication to ensure the smooth implementation of Foxconn’s project," said Patil.
Land Acquisition and Construction
In the Doddaballapur and Devanahalli taluks of the Bengaluru Rural district, Foxconn has purchased 300 acres in the ITIR Industrial Area. Additionally, the company has leased private land in Bengaluru district for the EV components manufacturing facility.
Conclusion
These initiatives in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka highlight India’s growing importance in the global technology manufacturing sector. The commitment of state governments to support such large-scale industrial projects underscores the country’s potential as a major player in the global supply chain.
