Fire Engulfs Mumbai's Heera Panna Mall: 14 Rescued, 4 Firefighters Hospitalized

A fire occurred at a Mumbai shopping mall, resulting in the evacuation of 20 individuals and the hospitalization of four. The fire was caused by either an electrical short circuit or a discarded cigarette and was worsened by a malfunction in the fire suppression system. Thankfully, the fire was contained to the 2nd and 3rd floors and did not spread beyond that.

A fire broke out at Heera Panna Mall in Jogeshwari West, causing disruption to office workers, traders, shoppers, and fitness enthusiasts. The fire required a large operation involving 12 fire engines and 80 firefighters. Several people were rescued, including an unconscious elderly person who was taken to the hospital. Two individuals were admitted to the intensive care unit due to smoke inhalation, while two others were discharged after receiving treatment. The CEO of the hospital confirmed their condition and stated that they were being closely monitored.

Three firefighters suffocated during the rescue and were promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention. Sandip Patil and Raju Shingankar were admitted to RN Cooper Hospital in Juhu, while Yogesh Kondawar was taken to Jogeshwari Trauma Care Centre. Following treatment, their condition was reported as stable.

The firefighters are facing a major obstacle due to the malfunction of the fire suppression system in the building. The fire originated from the electrical wiring of approximately 10 to 12 stores on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and it was contained within that area. Fire Chief Ravindra Ambulgekar stated that although an electrical short circuit seems to be the primary cause, they are currently investigating if a discarded cigarette might have also contributed to the fire.

Nine people were saved using a rotary ladder, while others were freed by firefighters. The rescue was made difficult due to thick smoke and limited ventilation, as well as the busy street outside. Five small hoses and high-pressure rescue lines were used to put out the fire.

After the rescue, Ranvijay Prabhakar, a member of the TTL firefighters, described the panic and confusion caused by the alarm and smoke at the Oneabove Fitness gym on the third floor. Luckily, the smoke was contained, allowing people to retrieve their belongings from undamaged offices. They then gathered on the rooftop of the gym canteen before leaving the building.

Mandeep Kapoor, a fitness enthusiast, climbed up the smoke-filled stairs with the help of housekeeping staff and a fitness trainer. Due to poor visibility, they needed a flashlight. Kapoor was relieved that a dangerous situation was avoided. Additionally, members of the Mitr Police, a civilian force, helped the firefighters in the rescue operation.
