The horrific rape and murder of a young doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College has resulted in a steep fall in the number of female residents who continue to stay on campus. As per the reports, there were only 17 women remaining in the hostel on Wednesday (August 21). Which is quite less compared to before the incident.

Women and Safety Concerns
The crime took place on Saturday, August 9 and shocked the entire nation. Fear gripped the female students leading to a mass departure from the hostel. By Tuesday, August 20 many women doctors and students had abandoned the hostel worried about their safety. This once-bustling hostel now stands empty with just a handful of women remaining.
Administration Under Pressure to Act
This tragedy received quick responses from the management of the college, who rushed to put many security measures in place. On Sunday, August 18, they increased the number of security guards and added a good number of CCTV cameras with strict entry rules. Most of them are thinking about leaving the campus, which clearly shows that the security measures haven't affected them positively.
Demanding Justice and Change
The incident has provoked protests and demands for justice. Students and faculty members organized a protest on Thursday, August 22, in order to pressure for the immediate arrest and punishment of miscreants. This incident has brought into the limelight what safety measures the RG Kar's college administration had in place before all this happened. The administration said it would look into this matter, but people's trust is already dented.
The Reputation of RG Kar Medical College
This horrific event has tarnished the image of RG Kar Medical College, one of the best and leading medical colleges in Kolkata. A campus that is supposed to be filled with laughter and hope is now filled with negative publicity and a steep decline in the number of enrollment by female students. The incident also raises larger concerns about the safety of students within schools and colleges in the country.

Campus at the Crossroads
As of August 23, 2024, the campus of RG Kar Medical College is in shambles. The campus reflected a vacuum, created from the exodus of female inmates, a catastrophe for sure, and the future looked uncertain for the institution. In the weeks ahead, the administration, mired with an exercise of firefighting to address issues of security and restore community trust, will have much to contend with.
