In order to demonstrate their position on a number of pressing demands, including a compensation package for losses brought on by recent floods, a legal guarantee for MSP, and exemption of debt, numerous farmer organisations began a three-day rail blockade on Thursday.
The move was made public by Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, general secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher after a major meeting of leaders from 19 different farmer organisations, according to news agency PTI.
The initiative has gained support from farmer organisations from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, among others, despite the fact that the majority of the participating farmer bodies are from Punjab.
Pandher said to PTI, that the farmers were asking for a number of things, including a full debt pardon, a legally binding guarantee of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) across all crop categories, and financial assistance packages for flood victims in north India.
The 'rail roko' is scheduled in 12 locations across Punjab, including Moga, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, Sangrur, Patiala, Ferozepur, Bathinda, and Amritsar.
Among the farmer bodies supporting the movement are — the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, Bharti Kisan Union (Krantikari), Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Azaad), Azaad Kisan Committee Doaba, Bharti Kisan Union (Behramke), Bharti Kisan Union (Shaheed Bhagat Singh), Bharti Kisan Union (Chottu Ram), Kisan Mahapanchayat (Haryana), Pagri Sambhal Jatta (Haryana), Progressive Farmer Front (Uttar Pradesh), Bhoomi Bachao Muhim (Uttarakhand) and the Rashtriya Kisan Sangathan (Himachal Pradesh).
