Nation-Wide Medical Strike in Protest Over the Hateful killing of a Doctor

The Federation of All India Medical Association today sought to call in a nationwide shutdown of elective services in hospitals from Monday, October 14, in support of the protests by doctors in West Bengal who were protesting the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The decision to withdraw services came after the FAIMA sat in meet on October 12. They have requested RDAs of all the states across the country to join the movement, but this time, maintaining emergency services 24x7.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Medical Associations (FEMA) has issued a two-day pen down strike notice across the private and government hospitals and medical colleges in West Bengal. FAIMA officials were disappointed that their demands for action previous to this national exercise were apparently ignored by the West Bengal government, compelling it to go ahead with the protest at the national level.

It put out a notice to all the medical establishments, asking them not to shut their emergency facilities, even during this nationwide protest. We cannot let critical patients suffer during this protest, FAIMA said in an official statement.

Junior doctors have been on a fast-unto-death in Kolkata since October 5, seeking justice for the trainee doctor who was brutally assaulted and murdered.
