Doctors End Strike, Partial Services to Resume
After the horrific rape and murder of a young medical student at RG Kar Medical College, the junior doctors in West Bengal had downed their tools. On Friday, however, they finally relented and decided to end the strike. It is a welcome respite that they will resume emergency services from Saturday, though outpatient services or OPD will remain suspended for now.
Focus Shifts to Emergency Services and Flood Relief
"Starting Saturday, we will partially restore the core services in government hospitals across Bengal," the protesting doctors declared. They also reaffirmed their commitment to aiding flood-affected communities across the state.
Though they have agreed to return to their emergency duties, the doctors still insist on enhanced security, especially for women employees, before fully resuming OPD and surgical services.
Protest Far from Over
The strike began when, on August 9, the body of a raped and murdered second-year postgraduate student was found. After a meeting between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-most of whose demands were agreed upon doctors tentatively agreed to go partially back to work-the issue of the principal secretary's removal remains unresolved.
.
Dr. Aqeeb, the main protest speaker said, We have achieved much-resulting in the resignation of the Kolkata Police Commissioner and some health officials. Our protest is still miles away from becoming over.
He said all the strategies regarding their future agendas had changes in the protest methods.

Justice Strategies New
The doctors have planned to take an anti-rally from Swasthya Bhawan to the CGO Complex. They are still undeterred and keeping their fight going for "Justice for Abhaya, " the victim, even as they closely observe how the Supreme Court is handling the case.
Essential services resumed Saturday but doctors said they will not report fully until the government improves security for female staff members. Our agitation continues and we remain focused on achieving justice for Abhaya,
added Dr. Aqeeb.
