The Delhi government has urged the Union environment ministry to impose a complete ban on firecracker burning and the movement of diesel buses across the National Capital Region (NCR). In a joint meeting with the Centre, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai suggested several measures to curb pollution in the entire NCR region.
Rai emphasised the need for a ban on firecrackers and stubble burning, as well as the promotion of CNG and electric vehicles. He also called for the conversion of industrial units to piped natural gas and the adoption of zigzag technology by brick kilns to mitigate pollution. Additionally, Rai proposed making electricity available to all housing societies in NCR states to reduce reliance on diesel generators and redirecting non-destined vehicles from the Eastern and Western Peripheral Motorways.
The Delhi government also organised a run to raise awareness about air pollution and seek public support for improving the city's air quality. Officials from various government departments participated in the 'Run Against Pollution' event and pledged to use public transport, turn off vehicle engines at traffic signals, and maintain clean surroundings. The government plans to relaunch the 'Red Light On Gaadi Off' campaign to combat vehicular pollution and reintroduce the 'Patakhe Nahi Diye Jalao' campaign to discourage the burning of firecrackers.
According to a report by the Centre for Science and Environment, 31% of Delhi's pollution originates from sources within the city, while 69% comes from sources in NCR states. The Delhi government has taken steps to curb air pollution during the winter season but believes that the cooperation of neighbouring states is necessary to address the sources of pollution in the NCR region. By implementing the proposed measures, the government aims to reduce pollution and improve air quality in the NCR.
