Delhi Government brings a halt to Ola, Uber, Rapido bike taxi

Millions of jobs are at risk because Uber, Ola, and Rapido's two-wheeler ride service has been banned in India's capital, New Delhi.

On Monday, the Delhi Transport Department warned the public that hiring private two-wheelers to transport passengers is against Indian law. It stated that the ban order would take effect right away.

“It has come to light that the bike taxi service provided by Uber, Ola, and Rapido have violated transport rules. Hence, the service has been by the city's transport department,” it said in the notice.

“It has been brought to the notice that two-wheelers having non-transport (private) registration mark/numbers are being used to carry passengers on hire which is a purely commercial operation and a violation of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.”

Ola, Uber, and Rapido are popular ride-hailing services that operate in India, and they offer bike taxi services in some cities, including Delhi. This would be a significant setback for the companies and could impact their business operations in India. The decision is bad news for commuters who mostly use bike taxi services because they offer cheap fares compared to car rides.
