Cyclonic storm 'Midhili' weakens in deep depression, heads towards northeast India: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that cyclonic storm "Midhili" weakened into a deep depression over Tripura and neighbouring Bangladesh on Saturday morning and will be heading towards the north-northeast over south Assam and neighbouring Mizoram and Tripura in the next six hours. The forecast authority had earlier stated that the cyclonic storm would be passing across the Sunderbans before coming down to the coast of Bangladesh.

“Cyclonic Storm “Midhili” weakened into a Deep Depression over Tripura and adjoining Bangladesh about 50 km N-NE of Maijdicourt (Bangladesh), and 60 km S-SE of Agartala,” the IMD said in its bulletin.

Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and Assam were among the northeastern states that saw intense rains on Friday as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal developed into a cyclonic storm. The IMD indicates that Saturday's weather is probably going to stay the same.

Mizoram's district administrations and district disaster management officials sent out advisories urging residents to stay vigilant and take preventative action against any potential rain-related incidents.

Four districts in Tripura have been issued a red alert in the meantime.

The Maldives gave the name "Midhili." Names of cyclones in sequence are provided by countries that are periodically affected by cyclones in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission (ESCAP) member nations as well as the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) adopted this approach.
