Cyclone Alert: Odisha & West Bengal Prepare for Dana's Impact!

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall across multiple states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Additionally, a cyclone alert has been declared for the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal due to a deep depression in the East Central Bay of Bengal, which is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm.

Rainfall Predictions for Odisha

In Odisha, light to moderate rainfall is anticipated today in districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsingpur, Puri, and Khorda. Furthermore, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted for Baleswar, Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Khorda, and Puri on October 24th and 25th.

 

Rainfall Expected in West Bengal

West Bengal is also expected to experience light to moderate rainfall today, particularly in South and North 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah, Hooghly, and Kolkata.

The IMD has reported that a depression over the East Central Bay of Bengal is likely to track west-northwestward and strengthen into a cyclonic storm by October 23rd. It is projected to escalate into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwestern Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 24th, making landfall along the coasts of northern Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of October 24th to the morning of October 25th.

In light of the impending storm, all fishing activities have been suspended from October 23rd to 25th in the Central and North Bay of Bengal. Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the East Central Bay of Bengal during this period.

Regional Rainfall Forecasts

  • East India: Odisha is expected to see light to moderate rainfall today, with Gangetic West Bengal likely to receive light to moderate rainfall and isolated heavy showers.

  • South Peninsular India: The IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall along with isolated thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Coastal & South Interior Karnataka over the next three days, with isolated heavy rainfall today.

  • West India: Light to moderate rainfall, coupled with isolated thunderstorms, is expected in Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra over the coming three days.

  • Northeast India: Regions including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura can expect light to moderate rainfall, with isolated thunderstorms over the next four days. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya may experience isolated heavy rainfall today.

  • Northwest India: No significant rainfall is anticipated in this region throughout the week.

Weather Update for Delhi

In Delhi, a predominantly clear sky is expected, with maximum temperatures reaching 35°C and minimum temperatures dropping to 20°C. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality index (AQI) in Delhi stands at 327, categorising it as 'very poor.'
