Cyclone Mandous created mass destruction in Tamil Nadu. The cyclone entered the Tamil Nadu coast on Friday midnight at almost 70 km/hr speed and created mass destruction in and around Chennai. The cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal and reached the Tamil Nadu coast around midnight between Sriharikota and Mahabalipuram and developed into a deep depression.
Mandous caused much destruction of resources and luckily not many deaths. Over 300 trees were uprooted in Chennai alone and caused the death of 6 people including 2 women. Exemplary disaster management by the Tamil Nadu government minimized the extent of destruction caused by the unfortunate event .
The rescue missions were led by chief minister M K Stalin himself and Tamil Nadu almost re-established most of the city's electricity and such essential services. Fishermen were prevented from going to sea and beaches were closed. By Saturday noon, electricity was established in almost every part. The Metro, suburban and local bus services were not much affected.
But the cyclone disrupted the rail and airways. Many trains were cancelled and flights were rerouted to Hyderabad and Bangalore. Over 25000 workers were appointed to aid in relief works. Mandous created huge losses to infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.
The Cyclone is currently in Andhra Pradesh and it caused the destruction of over 5000 hectares of cultivated land and one death was also reported. In the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, water logging was reported. Road transportation was also disrupted in many low-lying areas. The death toll most likely will not go up as the cyclone is getting weak.
Indian meteorological association has predicted rain in several parts of south India in the upcoming days. Yellow Alert was issued in many districts of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The cyclone also delayed many international as well as domestic flights. The relief programmes conducted by Tamil Nadu received national attention. The cyclone was being discussed for most of the past week and has reached land as a relatively slower cyclone. It is a slow-moving cyclone that absorbs moisture with it and causes heavy rainfall.
Mandous is now in a receding state and is moving towards the North East. The cyclone will most probably cause rain for the next 2,3 days in several parts of the peninsula as reported by the IMD
