A political storm has erupted in Haryana after the body of Congress worker Himani Narwal (22) was found stuffed in a suitcase near the Sampla bus stand in Rohtak on Saturday. The Congress has demanded a high-level probe into the incident, as Narwal was actively associated with Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra.
The shocking discovery came just a day before municipal elections in Haryana, where 33 civic bodies are set to go to the polls, with results expected on March 12.
Body Discovered Near Bus Stand
Passers-by noticed the suitcase near the Sampla bus stand and alerted the police. Upon reaching the scene, law enforcement officials, along with a forensic team, discovered Narwal’s body inside.
Initial investigations suggest that she may have been strangled with a dupatta, which was found wrapped around her neck. Police also noted that she had mehendi on her hands. The body was subsequently transported to PGIMS Rohtak for a post-mortem examination.
Congress Demands Impartial Probe
The Congress, in a post on X, expressed shock and condolences over Narwal’s death and called for an impartial investigation into the case. Narwal, a resident of Vijay Nagar, Rohtak, had shared several photographs of herself with senior Congress leaders, including MP Deepender Singh Hooda and MLA Bharat Bhushan Batra, on social media. Reacting to the incident, Batra demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder, emphasizing that Narwal was an active participant in every Congress programme.
Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda questioned the deteriorating law and order situation in Haryana and urged authorities to ensure the swift arrest of those responsible.
Police Investigation Underway
Sampla police station in-charge Vijendra Singh confirmed that an investigation had been launched. “We received information about the body in a suitcase and have registered a case. Further action will be taken after the post-mortem report is available,” he said. Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda condemned the incident, calling it a “barbaric murder” and a “blot on the state’s law and order”.
“The brutal murder of Congress worker Himani Narwal in Rohtak is extremely shocking. I express my deepest condolences to her family. This tragic incident raises serious concerns about the state’s security situation,” he wrote on X in Hindi.
He further demanded a high-level and impartial probe, insisting that the government must ensure justice for the victim’s family and deliver the harshest punishment to the perpetrators. With the case now under investigation, the incident has fueled intense political debate, with the Congress accusing the state government of failing to maintain law and order.
