In October, when crowding and bottleneck are projected to decrease, air travelers utilizing the domestic terminal at Chennai International Airport during peak hours may find it easier to move. Due to the airport's two operational domestic terminals, there may be less traffic and waiting times for passengers, especially those flying during the morning rush.
This action was taken when the international flight operations were moved to the new integrated terminal (T2) in July after a portion of it was opened. The international terminal (T4), which was previously used for international flights until a few months ago, will now serve as the second domestic terminal while the current domestic terminal (T1) continues to function as usual.
The work to upgrade the T4 terminal had begun, according to representatives of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and it would be finished in a few weeks. “The immigration counters are being removed now. Three conveyor belts are being moved to the T4 terminal. Then, we just need to make a few more alterations and carry out extensive cleaning work before it can be opened. Operating two domestic terminals will significantly increase the capacity of the airport to handle more passengers,” an official said.
According to the officials, airlines like IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa will utilize the T1 terminal while Air India, Air Asia, and Vistara will use the T4 terminal. According to sources, signage must be prominently displayed at all key intersections, such as the airport's entry and exit points and service roads, to let travelers know which airlines operate out of the T1 and T4 terminals. Despite plans to start operating two domestic terminals in July, it looks like that won't happen until next month.
Ten years after its debut, the T4 terminal's arrival hall will start operating.
