Chaos in Patna: Protest Turns Violent After Two Kids Found Dead in Car

Patna was gripped by tension on Monday evening as violent protests erupted following the tragic death of two young siblings in the Indrapuri area. What began as a demonstration demanding justice soon escalated into widespread chaos on Atal Path, leaving several police personnel injured, vehicles set ablaze, and top officials rushing to the scene to restore order.

The unrest came just days after the bodies of a nine-year-old girl and her five-year-old brother were recovered from inside a parked car on August 15. Allegations of foul play and claims of police inaction have fueled public anger, with locals accusing the authorities of covering up the case.

How the Protest Turned Violent

On Monday evening, hundreds of residents gathered on Atal Path to voice their outrage over the children’s mysterious deaths. Demonstrators blocked traffic, burned tyres, and raised slogans demanding strict action against those responsible.

According to visuals from the site, the situation spiraled out of control as protesters set vehicles on fire, including two police bikes and a Scorpio belonging to the Prohibition Department. They also hurled stones and glass bottles at police personnel, injuring several.

Patna (Central) SP Diksha told PTI,

“The incident took place when locals blocked traffic demanding justice for the two children who died on August 15. As soon as police reached the spot, the mob turned violent, damaged vehicles, pelted stones, and even set two vehicles on fire.”

Police resorted to lathi-charge and even fired two to three rounds in the air to disperse the aggressive crowd. Despite this, the unrest lasted nearly two and a half hours, causing a traffic jam stretching over a kilometer.

Police and Security Forces Targeted

At least five police personnel, including a woman constable, sustained injuries during the clashes. SP Diksha herself was reportedly manhandled by the mob.

“Mild force had to be used to disperse the crowd. Ten people, including some women, have been arrested, and further arrests will follow after examining CCTV footage,” she said.

Later in the evening, IG Jitendra Rana and SSP Karthikey Sharma, along with forces from more than a dozen police stations, reached the protest site to bring the situation under control. Sharma confirmed that a case has been registered against 250 unidentified persons involved in the violence.

Inconvenience to Public and VVIPs

The violent agitation not only paralyzed traffic but also trapped several high-profile convoys. Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey’s vehicle came under attack as stone-pelters smashed its window. Former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav was also stuck in the traffic jam for over an hour.

Meanwhile, ambulances and ordinary commuters were caught in the chaos. Fearing for their safety, many residents abandoned their vehicles on the road and fled the area. Protesters even cut off power supply in parts of Atal Path to create further disruption.

What Sparked the Anger?

The agitation stems from the shocking discovery on August 15, when the bodies of Lakshmi (7) and her younger brother Deepak (5) were found on the middle seat of a car parked inside an open boundary in Indrapuri.

The children had left home around 12:30 p.m. for tuition classes but never returned. Their tuition teacher reportedly told the parents that the children had already left for home, raising suspicions. Hours later, their lifeless bodies were discovered.

Their mother, Kiran, alleged foul play and accused the police of negligence:

“My children have been murdered. There were strangulation marks and injuries on their hands. The police are covering up the matter instead of acting against the culprits. We want justice.”

Investigation and Conflicting Claims

Police have maintained that the cause of death is unclear. They suggested that the children might have entered the car while playing, hinting at a possible accident.

The post-mortem report ruled out burning, despite initial suspicions. Doctors noted that the peeling of skin could have happened while removing the bodies from the vehicle. The final cause of death is expected to be confirmed only after the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report.

However, locals and the children’s family refuse to accept this explanation. The mother has accused the tuition teacher of beating and burning the children, pointing to visible injury and burn marks.

Police are currently investigating the case from two angles—murder and accident—but widespread distrust in their handling of the probe has only fueled public outrage.

Political Reactions

The violent incident quickly drew sharp political reactions. Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of the Opposition in Bihar Assembly and RJD leader, lashed out at the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government after videos of Minister Mangal Pandey’s convoy being attacked went viral.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Yadav wrote:

“In the last few days, 5–6 children have been killed in Patna by criminals entering homes. Due to the poor law and order situation, people angry with the murder of two children in Patel Nagar attacked Health Minister Mangal Pandey’s vehicle. Instead of listening to victims, Pandey behaves arrogantly, considering it beneath him to even talk to them.”

He went on to slam the BJP-led government, accusing it of failing to ensure public safety and calling Chief Minister Nitish Kumar “unconscious and insensitive.”

The Road Ahead

For now, police have arrested at least 10 people linked to the violence and continue to identify others through CCTV footage. They have also assured that those responsible for the children’s deaths will be “nabbed very soon.”

Despite these assurances, public anger remains high. The tragedy of Deepak and Lakshmi has struck a chord across Patna, with many residents accusing authorities of mishandling the investigation and ignoring the family’s pleas.

As investigations proceed on both possible angles—murder and accident—the city waits anxiously for answers. For the grieving parents and the community at large, justice cannot come soon enough.
