Centre to rename NMML in Delhi as Prime Minister's Museum and Society

A heated political discussion has erupted, both online and offline, following the decision of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society to eliminate the mention of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru from its name and rename the institution as the Prime Ministers' Museum and Library Society. The decision to change the Society's name comes almost a year after the inauguration of the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya at the Teen Murti Bhavan, the former official residence of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. On Friday, a meeting was held, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who serves as the vice president of the Society, where the decision to remove the name of Nehru from the institution's name was made.

During the meeting, Nripendra Misra, the Chairman of the Executive Council, highlighted the importance of changing the name by emphasizing that the Prime Ministers' Museum symbolizes the nation's strong dedication to democracy. Therefore, it was suggested that the institution's name should reflect its new form. In response to the Center's decision to rename the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, the Congress criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. During the meeting, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his support for the name change proposal. The statement mentioned that Singh welcomed the proposal as the institution, in its new form, showcases the contributions of all prime ministers from Jawaharlal Nehru to Narendra Modi, along with their respective responses to various challenges they encountered. In 2016, Prime Minister Modi proposed the establishment of a museum dedicated to all the prime ministers of India at the Teen Murti premises. The Executive Council of NMML approved this project during its 162nd meeting held on November 25, 2016.

On April 21 of the following year, the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya was officially opened to the public. Interestingly, despite receiving an invitation from the government, no member of the Nehru-Gandhi family attended the inauguration ceremony. It is worth noting that three members of the Nehru-Gandhi family, namely Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi, have previously served as Indian Prime Ministers.

The museum, which has attracted a significant number of visitors, seamlessly combines different elements. It commences at the renovated and modernized Nehru Museum building, featuring technologically advanced displays that showcase the life and contributions of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Housed in a new building, the museum then proceeds to narrate the story of how our Prime Ministers steered the nation through various challenges and ensured comprehensive progress for the country.
