Brij Bhushan Case: Vinesh Phogat Says Police Cover Withdrawn, Court Steps In

Prominent wrestler Vinesh Phogat claimed on Thursday that the Delhi Police had removed the protection provided to female competitors who were scheduled to give testimony in the sexual harassment case against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh head of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) .

Brij Bhushan, a former BJP MP, was accused of harassing a number of female wrestlers, although he denied the accusations. Prominent wrestlers across began staging protests in January of last year, calling for Brij Bhushan Singh's arrest. The protest lasted for several months.

The response of Delhi Police to Vinesh said that "The security provided to the wrestlers hasn't been withdrawn; it was decided to request Haryana Police to take over the responsibility in future since the protectees normally reside there," 

The statement further said that “ the assigned Delhi Police PSOs misunderstood this decision and got delayed in reporting today. The situation has been rectified. Security cover continues."

According to a report in Live Law, a Delhi Court on Thursday ordered the Delhi Police to set up women's protection immediately, as they will be testifying against Brij Bhushan.

The report added that three female wrestlers filed an application claiming that the Delhi Police had reduced their security, and ACJM Priyanka Rajpoot of Rouse Avenue Courts then issued the temporary order.
