A massive landslide on Tuesday morning devastated the 510 MW power station of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation's (NHPC) Teesta Stage 5 dam in Sikkim. The power station, located in a region prone to frequent minor slides, was buried under debris as a large portion of the adjacent hill collapsed.
The incident occurred without any reported injuries or casualties, as the power station had been evacuated several days prior due to ongoing landslide threats. Videos recorded by nearby workers captured the moment a section of the cliff shifted and then fell, engulfing the power station beneath it.
Power Station Reduced to Rubble as Hill Collapses
The Teesta Stage 5 dam has been out of operation since October 2023, when a cloudburst caused the Lhonak glacial lake to burst, triggering a flash flood. This catastrophic event had already damaged parts of the Teesta Dam at Chungthang, Sikkim’s largest hydropower project, with videos showing large portions of the dam's wall washed away by the surging Teesta River in North Sikkim's Mangan district.
The latest landslide further compounds the challenges faced by the Teesta project, raising concerns over the region's vulnerability to natural disasters.
