In the midst of a significant controversy over claims that the milk supplement had a high sugar content, NCPCR wrote to Bournvita.
The maker of the health drink Bournvita, Mondelez India International, has been asked in writing by the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to examine and remove "misleading" container labels and marketing. The notice was issued amid a major controversy surrounding claims that the milk supplement included a lot of sugar.
The Organisation for Children's Rights also requested the Central Consumer Protection Authority and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to take legal action against businesses that violate advertising or food safety regulations.
"It has been brought to the notice of the Commission that your product contains a high percentage of sugar and contents/substances/mixtures/formula which may cause harmful impact to the health of children," the notice said addressing Deepak Iyer, president of Mondelez International, India.
NCPCR noted that Bournvita ‘fails to display mandatory disclosures in line with the guidelines and regulations of FSSAI and under the Consumer Protection Act’.
The controversy started when a health influencer accused Bournvita in a video of containing high levels of sugar, cocoa solids, and a cancer-causing colorant. Later, after receiving a legal notification from the company accusing him of making false statements, he removed the video.
