In the past 16 days, over 500 flights, including both domestic and international routes operated by Indian airlines, have faced bomb threats hoaxes originating on social media. This wave of threats has disrupted operations and raised alarms about aviation security. Air India, IndiGo, and Vistara have been among the most affected flights. Since the beginning of this threat wave, over 400 hoax calls have been made. This demands security agencies to enhance vigilance to ensure passenger safety across Indian airlines.
Mumbai police have registered 14 FIRs
Airlines followed security protocols upon receiving the threats. Mumbai police have registered 14 FIRs in response to several threats on social media. The cases against unidentified individuals have filed for spreading the hoaxes on platform X. After verification the threats were confirmed as hoaxes. The Ministry of Information Technology has directed social media platforms to remove any misleading content quickly to curb the spread of hoax information.
Civil aviation minister K. Rammohan Naidu also announced legislative measures that could ban individuals who issue such threats. Over 400 hoax calls have been reported recently at multiple airports across the country. Authorities have noted that social media platforms are a primary source of these threats. An X account recently sent threats to multiple airlines, mentioning specific flight numbers and stating explosives on board.
Andheri Woman Falsely Reported as 'Human Bomb'
A 60-year-old woman from Andheri (West) was falsely reported as a "human bomb" carrying Rs 90 lakh by an anonymous caller early Friday morning. The call, made to Delhi airport's control room at 1:30 am, claimed that the woman was flying from Mumbai to Delhi and then to Uzbekistan. Authorities investigated and discovered that no such flight bookings were done. Further inquiry revealed that the caller, believed to be her nephew made the hoax call over a family dispute. A case has been registered, and a police team is working to locate him. This was the 13th bomb threat FIR lodged at Sahar police station within 11 days.
