BMC Takes Control of 120 Acres at Mahalakshmi Race Course

In a significant development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken possession of 120 acres of land at the Mahalakshmi Race Course, bringing an end to a decades-long dispute. The transfer, approved by the state government, enables the BMC to create a Central Park, gardens, and open spaces.

The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), which has held the lease since 1914, retains 91 acres for ongoing use. The lease expired in 2013, and after extensive negotiations, an agreement was reached.

Dr. Bhushan Gagrani, the Municipal Commissioner, confirmed the handover and expressed his excitement about creating a green oasis for Mumbai residents. Despite minor outstanding issues, the BMC is committed to resolving them promptly.

Activists and citizens concerned about potential commercial exploitation have criticized the proposal. However, the BMC has assured that the area will remain non-commercial, emphasizing the need to renovate the deteriorating racecourse for safety reasons.

This initiative promises to improve Mumbai's green spaces, benefiting the city's residents.
