BMC Demolishes Portions of Ajay Devgn’s Juhu Bungalow Over Alleged Unauthorised Construction

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has demolished portions of alleged unauthorised construction at Ajay Devgn’s bungalow in Juhu, saying work continued even after it was told to stop.

The civic body said it acted on Saturday, weeks after it issued a stop-work notice on September 10. The allegations are the BMC’s. No court has ruled on them, and the owners’ side has contested part of the claim.

The notice and what followed

The BMC issued the notice under Section 354A of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act. It directed that the construction work be stopped immediately and that the owner or occupier produce the relevant permissions and documents within 24 hours, according to one account.

The civic body says the work reportedly went on regardless, and that it rejected the owners’ response to the notice before moving in. It then removed the portions of the construction it considered unauthorised.

What the work involved

Reports differ on the nature of the work. One report says the bungalow, located in the Kapole Co-operative Housing Society in Juhu, had internal alterations, including changes to partition walls and windows, made without the necessary permissions. Another, citing an earlier report, says the notice concerned work on a proposed salon and spa at the property, and the BMC’s action also touches on the proposed commercial use. The property is described as a 7,802-square-foot bungalow that reportedly belongs to Devgn and his mother.

The other side

At the time the notice was issued, a source associated with Devgn disputed claims that the required permissions were missing. I could not find a fresh statement from Devgn, his family or his representatives after the demolition.

Why it matters

Stop-work notices under the MMC Act give owners little time to produce papers, and the BMC can pull down unauthorised work if the notice is not complied with. Property owners generally have the option of challenging such action before the courts. The case is drawing attention because of the actor’s profile and the area. Juhu has seen several high-profile civic actions over alleged violations in recent years.

What to watch

Whether the family contests the demolition legally, what the BMC says about the extent of the removal, and whether any proposed commercial use was approved are the key questions. An official statement from either side would clarify them.
