Blue Light, Three Fake Stars: When the ‘IPS’ Impostor Met Real Cops and Got Exposed

In a rather unusual but serious case, police recently caught a man pretending to be a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. He was not just wearing the uniform; he had gone to the extent of using a car fitted with a blue beacon and three stars on the number plate, trying to pass himself off as an Inspector General (IG). His plan worked for a while—until he ran into real police officers, who quickly saw through his act.

This story may sound like the plot of a movie, but it shows how impostors can exploit symbols of power and authority to fool people. Dressing up as a senior officer, the conman reportedly tried to gain respect, influence, and access to places usually restricted to the public. However, when the real officers cross-checked his credentials and documents, his lie was exposed, and he was taken into custody.

Why Impersonators Do This

Cases like this are not entirely new. Over the years, police across India have caught several people impersonating officers or government officials. Sometimes, the reason is petty—like wanting to impress others. Other times, the motive is more dangerous, such as extorting money, gaining illegal benefits, or even trying to smuggle goods.

Experts say that in most of these cases, impostors rely on the fact that ordinary people rarely question someone wearing a uniform or showing a government symbol. A car with a beacon light and stars can easily convince people to step aside, salute, or even cooperate without suspicion.

Public Safety Concerns

For the public, the big concern is safety. If a fake officer approaches someone, how can one know whether it is genuine or not? This question has gained attention on social media, where many citizens suggested that people should always ask for official identity cards. In India, all IPS officers carry a government-issued ID proof, and people have the right to politely ask for it if they are doubtful.

Retired police officials also recommend better monitoring of uniforms, insignias, and beacon lights. Misuse of these creates not only confusion but also mistrust in genuine officers who work hard to protect people. Some experts even suggest stricter penalties for impersonation cases so that such acts are strongly discouraged.

A Lesson for All

The arrest of this impostor is more than just a funny or shocking headline—it’s a reminder that appearances can be deceiving. Respecting uniforms is important, but blind trust without checks can be risky. As common citizens, maintaining awareness, asking for proper identification, and reporting doubtful activities to local authorities can make a big difference.

The police have done their part by exposing this impersonator. The bigger lesson, however, lies with society. We need to learn that respect must come with responsibility—whether it’s about wearing a uniform honestly or questioning someone who pretends to.
