Bharat Bandh 2024- Largely peaceful protests with sporadic incidents of violence

On August 21, the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) organizations, leading the Bharat Bandh, called on the central government to create a special law to safeguard reservations for SCs and STs. They are urging for this law to be added to the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution to prevent legal challenges.

The National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR), a coalition of SC and ST groups, organized this protest against a recent Supreme Court ruling that permits states to sub-classify SCs/STs for "quota within quota" for more disadvantaged groups.

The bandh received backing from several political parties, including the BSP, Samajwadi Party, and Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram). It had a notable impact in Jharkhand and Bihar, states set for Assembly elections soon. If their demands aren't addressed by the Winter Session of Parliament, the leaders have vowed to escalate their protests.
