Amid Bengaluru water Crisis sewage board bans pool parties & rain dance for Holi 2024

Amid the ongoing water crisis in Bengaluru, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has set some limitations for the city's Holi celebrations on March 25. The board has encouraged commercial and recreational facilities not to use Cauvery or borewell water for pool parties or rain dances to commemorate the festival of colours.

"Organising entertainment like rain dances and pool parties for commercial purposes is not advisable at this time," the BWSSB stated in its directive. In the public interest, using borewells and Cauvery water is forbidden.

The board highlighted that Holi is "a festival celebrating Hindu culture" and that there are no limitations on celebrating it at home with these conditions.

Following this decision, numerous Bengaluru hotels have begun selling tickets for a pool party planned for the Holi celebrations. Tickets for the "Holi Rain Dance Party" at J K Grand Arena, Rang De Bengaluru 2024, are available on BookMyShow for ₹199. The "Open Air-Pool Holi Festival" is being held at the Lago Palms resort as well. Among the hotels and resorts providing "rain dance, Punjabi dhol, unlimited colours and holi party till the sun sets down" is the Jayamahal Palace Hotel. On the other hand, tickets for the dry Holi celebration at HOLI 2024 at LULU Mall start at ₹299.

Cauvery water crisis

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated earlier on Monday that officials have been instructed to meet daily and devise an action plan to address the water constraint. The tech capital is experiencing a 500 million litres per day (MLD) shortage against a requirement of 2,600 MLDs.

The Cauvery River provides 1,470 MLD of water, while borewells provide 650 MLD, according to the CM.

Six thousand out of Bengaluru's fourteen thousand borewells have dried up. Water bodies have either perished or been overrun. Water needed in Bengaluru is 2,600 MLD. Of this, 650 MLD originates from borewells and 1,470 MLD from the Cauvery River. About 500 MLD are lacking," the Chief Minister informed reporters.
