The Karnataka Department of School Education and Literacy is considering a change in school timings in Bengaluru, prompted by a suggestion from the Karnataka High Court. A meeting is scheduled for October 5 to discuss this potential adjustment. The primary goal is to alleviate the city's notorious traffic congestion.
Currently, most schools in Bengaluru start at 8:30 a.m., but there is a proposal to move this up by 30 minutes to an hour. The intention behind this shift is to reduce traffic congestion on the city's roads.
However, various stakeholders, including school management, private transport providers, and parents, have expressed concerns about this plan. They worry that altering school timings could have negative consequences for the physical and mental well-being of both children and parents. Instead, these groups have suggested increasing police presence at major traffic intersections near schools to ease traffic flow.
Shashi Kumar D, the general secretary of the Associated Management of Schools in Karnataka (KAMS), believes that changing school timings could create problems for parents and children. Many households already begin their daily routines as early as 4:30 a.m., and adjusting school timings might lead to sleep deprivation, affecting physical and mental health.
Kumar also pointed out that revising school timings would inconvenience various stakeholders, including school management, teaching and non-teaching staff, who would also need to start early. This change could put additional pressure on them and potentially impact their well-being.
