The Bengaluru transport department has implemented a ban on carpooling within the city, and individuals found in violation of this regulation may face fines of up to Rs 10,000.
The decision to prohibit carpooling came in response to numerous complaints lodged by the taxi association, citing concerns that unregistered cars were operating as taxis.
According to the transport department officials, vehicles with white number plates, not authorized for commercial use, cannot be employed for taxi services.
Reports indicate that those participating in carpooling through mobile applications may face penalties, including a potential six-month suspension of the vehicle's registration certificate (RC) and fines ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.
An official remarked, "Carpooling applications are in violation of regulations as they aggregate private cars unsuitable for commercial purposes. We have been receiving complaints from taxi driver unions, and the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) have been instructed to take action against these unlawful operations."
