Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Meets Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi in Delhi

Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister of Bangladesh, met with Sonia Gandhi, the chair of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), Rahul Gandhi, the former president of the Congress, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the general secretary of the party, while she was in New Delhi for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his council of ministers.

The encounter underscores the long-standing bond that dates back to their forebears between the Gandhi family and Sheikh Hasina. The founding leader of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina's father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was friendly and cordial with India's then-prime minister, Indira Gandhi. During the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, Indira Gandhi was a key figure in favour of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan. The two families and their respective countries have long harboured a spirit of gratitude and respect for one another as a result of this historical assistance.

A high-profile event with prominent leaders from India's neighbouring region and the Indian Ocean, including President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda,' and President Rl Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka, was part of Sheikh Hasina's visit to New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu threw a banquet at Rashtrapati Bhavan for the international dignitaries after the swearing-in ceremony.

Muhammad Hasan Mahmud, Bangladesh's foreign minister, said Sheikh Hasina indicated her desire to work with the new Indian government to develop bilateral relations even more.

"After attending the swearing-in ceremony, PM Sheikh Hasina met with PM Narendra Modi one-on-one and once again congratulated him and the NDA on winning the elections. In order to fortify the relationship going forward, she indicates her desire to collaborate with the incoming administration,"

Mahmud stated. Furthermore, Sheikh Hasina invited Prime Minister Modi to come to Bangladesh.
