Auto rickshaw and taxi fares go up in Delhi

The Delhi government has recently increased the fares of auto rickshaws and taxis amid the rising prices of CNG. According to the decision made by the government, a passenger taking an auto will have to pay Rs. 30 instead of the existing Rs.25 for the initial 1.5 km. For every subsequent km, passengers will now have to pay Rs.11 instead of Rs.9.

The night surge and waiting charges for these vehicles remain the same. This news comes as a relief to nearly 2 lakh auto rickshaws and taxi drivers who had to bear extra costs due to the increase in CNG prices recently. The fares for taxis were last revised in 2013 and for autos in 2020.

The Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot had received many requests and demands regarding the rise in prices, from taxi and auto rickshaw associations and unions. Therefore, a committee of 13 members was formed in May 2022 to review and recommend the fares due to the rise in the rates of CNG, cost and maintenance of auto-rickshaw and taxis, and other issues affecting the net earnings of these service providers.

According to the recommendations of the committee, it was needed to increase the fares of black and yellow taxis as well as economy taxis. This was also approved by the Delhi government, but the committee did not recommend increasing the prices of premium taxis otherwise they would be very expensive for users.

Delhi's transport minister said that the city has witnessed an increase in fuel prices in recent months, which has impacted these drivers. The increased prices restricted them to travel much further, which also caused inconvenience for citizens. The revised rates will help the drivers support their families and also provide convenience for passengers. This decision will help nearly 2 lakh auto rickshaws and taxi drivers.
