Assembly Elections 2024: BJP-Led Mahayuti Triumphs in Maharashtra; JMM's Hemant Soren Set for a Second Term in Jharkhand

In Maharashtra, celebrations broke out as the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which includes Shiv Sena and NCP factions, secured a landslide victory in the state assembly elections. Senior leaders like Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Bhupendra Yadav were seen flashing victory signs and to take charge and form the next government. Meanwhile, in Jharkhand, Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana Soren emerged as the driving force behind the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's (JMM) win. Leading in 34 of the 43 seats it contested, the JMM is now set for a second consecutive term in the state.

Maharashtra: Current Status of Results

Here is the latest seat tally as the counting progresses:

  • BJP: Leading with 133 seats.
  • Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction): Secured 57 seats.
  • NCP (Ajit Pawar faction): Claimed 41 seats, as of now.
  • Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction): Managed to win 20 seats
  • Congress: Currently at 15 seats.

Maharashtra and Jharkhand Elections results

In Maharashtra, the 288-seat assembly election has become a battleground for two major alliances. On one side is the Mahayuti alliance, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). On the other side is the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), led by the Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction). This is the first election since the dramatic splits within the Shiv Sena and the NCP and Mahayuti alliance is aiming to retain power. However, the MVA has put up a strong fight, although it is unlikely to cross the majority mark.

  • JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha): Leading with 34 seats.
  • BJP:  21 seats.
  • Congress: Secured 16 seats.
  • RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal): Bagged 4 seats.
  • CPI(ML)(L) : 2 seats

High-Stakes Maharashtra and Jharkhand Elections: Vote Counting in Progress

In the 81-seat Jharkhand assembly election, the fight is between the ruling JMM-led INDIA bloc and the BJP-led NDA. Early trends indicate that the INDIA bloc has crossed the halfway mark, giving the ruling alliance a reason to hope for retaining power. The NDA, however, remains optimistic, banking on the central government's work and promises to sway voters in its favor.
