Assam floods: Over 4 lakh people affected, NDRF rescued over 120

Flood situation in numerous districts of Assam remained dire and more than 4 lakh people are affected. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), which has sent 10 teams to carry out flood relief operations in the State, has rescued and relocated more than 120 people to safer locations in Assam, an official said a day prior.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union home minister Amit Shah addressed on Sunday as the Shah gave Sarma comfort by noting that the Modi administration continues to stand solidly with the people of Assam in these trying times.

"Due to heavy rain, the people in parts of Assam are braving a flood-like situation. I have spoken to CM Shri @himantabiswa Ji and assured all possible assistance. NDRF teams are already on the ground conducting relief and rescue operations and adequate forces are on standby," Shah tweeted.

This was followed by a tweet from Sarma: "Gratitude Hon'ble Home Minister for your proactive response & concern regarding the flood situation in Assam. The Assam Government is on high alert and providing all assistance to the affected persons. We are grateful to Hon PM Shri @narendramodi Ji for all the help to the state from the Government of India."

"I told the Union home minister that so far the flood is under control, though few rivers were flowing above the danger line," Sarma said.

"A total of 10 teams have been deployed in Assam that are conducting rescue and evacuation from low-lying areas. So far, 123 persons and several cattle have been shifted to safer places," an NDRF spokesperson said in an update issued at 6.30 p.m.

There are around 35–40 rescuers on each NDRF squad.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three people have already died in the state's first wave of flooding this year.

Over 4,07,700 people were affected by the flood in nine districts: Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, and Udalguri, according to an ASDMA report.
