Assam flood situation worsens as 16.50 lakh people in 29 districts get affected

According to an official bulletin, Assam's flood situation worsened further on Thursday, affecting over 16.50 lakh people in 29 districts, as the major rivers in the state started flowing over the danger limit. Large areas of land have been flooded in the Kamrup (Metro) region due to the Brahmaputra, Digaru, and Kollong rivers flowing above the red mark.

The latest updates on the flood situation:

As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority's (ASDMA) daily flood report, two individuals lost their lives in the Tezpur revenue circle of Sonitpur district, and one person each drowned in Mayong of Morigaon; Naharkatia, Dibrugarh; Pub Mangaladi, Darrang; Dergaon, Golaghat; Halem, Biswanath; and Margherita, Tinsukia. This increases the overall number of fatalities from this year's storm, landslide, and flooding to 56. 

The situation in Kaziranga

17 wild animals, including a hog deer and a rhino calf, drowned in Kaziranga National Park, but 72 animals were successfully rescued by forest workers. According to an official, 25 animals have been released back into the wild, while 32 creatures are presently undergoing treatment. With 173 forest camps still struggling with the effects of the floods, the flood situation in Kaziranga continues to be very serious.

Relief Camps and Rehabilitation

Almost 2,800 settlements spread across 105 revenue circles are still submerged, and floods have inundated 39,451.51 hectares of cropland. In 24 districts devastated by flooding, the government of Assam set up 515 relief camps and distribution centres, housing nearly 3.86 lakh peopleAssam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated during a media briefing on Wednesday that the state government has access to Rs 1,300 crore in central funds to address the flood crisis. He said that to raise awareness among the authorities, several ministers have been appointed to camp out in the impacted districts for three days starting on Thursday. Their goal is to make sure that the people receive prompt relief and rehabilitation.

To assess the situation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to visit flood-affected regions on Thursday in the Guwahati Metropolitan area, specifically Maligaon, Pandu Port, and Temple Ghat. The central government declared that it would provide Assam and Manipur with more personnel, boats, and life-saving supplies as part of its full support for the states devastated by flooding.
