Self-proclaimed saint Asaram, doomed in a rape case, has been exempted after serving 11 years and 4 months in Jodhpur jail. His dismissal caught people's attention and many supporters blew in to see him. When he got out, Asaram chose to go into seclusion, escaping from public interaction. His conviction was in connection with a 2013 case in which he was pronounced guilty of sexually violating a minor girl at his ashram.
After his interim bail in the rape case from the Rajasthan High Court, on Tuesday 14th January late at night, Asaram (Inmate no.-130) left the Arogyaam Hospital located in Bhagat's Kothi and reached his ashram in Pal village, Jodhpur. Meanwhile, a volume of his devotees compiled outside the hospital and garlanded Asaram. When he reached his ashram at around 10 o'clock, the devotees there also welcomed him with fireworks, and at 11 o'clock in the night, Asaram went into solitude.
Short-term bail after petitioning the High Court
Asaram has been condemned to life imprisonment in two rape cases, one of which was in Gandhinagar (Gujarat) and the other in Jodhpur (Rajasthan). He got bail from the Supreme Court on 7 January in a case related to Gujarat. Asaram did not get relief in the Jodhpur rape case, so his lawyer filed a petition in the High Court. And now yesterday he got bail in the Jodhpur case as well, which has been given to him for 75 days. This bail has been granted to Asaram based on his continuing health condition.
Attempts by multifarious lawyers:
The SOS petition was filed before a bench comprising Justices Dinesh Mehta and Vineet Kumar Mathur— stated Nishant Borda(Asaram's lawyer). Lawyers RS Saluja, Nishant Boda, Yashpal Singh Rajpurohit, and Bharat Saini advocated on behalf of Asaram.
In the Gujarat case, a plea was made for Asaram's treatment, considering his age and health, the Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to Asaram till March 31. During 75 days, he has been permitted to stay in any ashram in the country and get his treatment done in any hospital. But there is an order from the Supreme Court that he cannot meet his followers.
Since 2013, Asaram has been continuously trying for bail and has assembled an army of top lawyers. Lawyers like Ram Jethmalani, Salman Khurshid, Omkar Singh Lakhawat, CV Nagesh, KTS Tulsi, KK Menon, Pos Pol, and Dr. Subramanian Swamy tried but failed.
Jodhpur Advent
Asaram was arrested by Jodhpur Police on 2 September 2013 in the case of raping an underaged girl in Jodhpur's Manai Ashram (Indore). On April 25, 2018, Jodhpur's Special POCSO Court found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Gandhinagar Advent
A rape case was also registered against Asaram by a woman from the ashram in Gandhinagar, under which the court sentenced him to life imprisonment on 31 January 2023.
Female doctor demand in jail
A medical checkup was done before being sent to Jodhpur Central Jail, then he did not have any disease. After spending a month in jail, Asaram mentioned his first illness called Trinadi Colic. In the petition filed on 4th September 2013, he stated that he had been suffering from this disease for 13 and a half years and a lady doctor Neeta had been treating him for 2-3 years.
He said that Neeta should be allowed to come to Central Jail for 8 days for treatment. However, he was checked up by the medical board and no such disease was found.
