Arundhati Roy win Lifetime Achievement Award at 45th European Essay Prize

The Charles Veillon Foundation has declared that writer Arundhati Roy has been honoured with the prestigious 45th European Essay Prize in recognition of her exceptional lifetime achievements.
Roy's recognition stems from the commendation of the French translation of her compilation of essays titled 'Azadi' (2021). According to a statement from the Foundation, the jury of the Prix European de l'Essai aims to highlight Roy's exceptional work, which encompasses profound reflections on the construction of the world and the relationship with language. They commend Roy for employing the essay as a tool for combat, critically analyzing fascism and it's evolving structures—a subject of increasing relevance in our lives. The Foundation states that Roy's essays provide solace and refuge to numerous individuals. The jury also acknowledges Roy's unwavering commitment to political action.

In 'Azadi', Roy deeply contemplates the meaning of freedom in an era characterized by the rise of authoritarianism. The essays explore various aspects, including reflections on language in both public and private spheres, as well as the role of fiction and alternative imaginings in the current times.

Renowned author Arundhati Roy, known for her notable works such as the Booker Prize-winning novel 'The God of Small Things,' 'The Ministry of Utmost Happiness,' and 'My Seditious Heart,' has gained both national and international recognition. Roy is set to receive the prestigious European Essay Prize, accompanied by a prize amount of CHF 20,000 (approximately Rs 18 lakh). The award ceremony will take place on September 12 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Established in 1975, the Charles Veillon Foundation's award honours exceptional books or the works of authors who contribute to the development and dissemination of progressive thoughts through their writings. The foundation emphasized that the prize aims to spotlight authors whose work serves as a valuable testimony and insightful commentary on contemporary societies, their practices, and ideologies. Previous recipients of the European Essay Prize include esteemed authors like Alexandre Zinoviev, Edgar Morin, Tzvetan Todorov, Amin Maalouf, Siri Hustvedt, Alessandro Baricco, Jean Starobinski, Iso Camartin, and Peter von Matt.
