Indian Air Force Day 2024
Indian Air Force History

The Indian Air Force came into existence on 8th October in the year 1932 under British rules. At that time, it was called Royal Indian Air Force or RIAF. The RIAF was a small force with only six trained officers and 19 air soldiers. The force had in its fleet only four biplanes, of  Westland Wapiti IIA type that had been mainly used for army co-operation tasks. In World War II, it proved to be a strong support for the British forces in various campaigns. When India got free in 1947, the air force became an important component of defense policy. In 1950, once India declared itself a republic, the Indian Air Force dropped the word "Royal" from its name and simply became the Indian Air Force, or IAF. Since then, this IAF has been an independent force serving under the Indian government, marked  the history of the IAF in protecting this country's airspace and participating in military as well as humanitarian missions.

Indian Air Force Day 2024

Why is the Indian Air Force celebrated on October 8th?

This date was selected for Indian Air Force Day because the day happens to be the day on which the IAF came into existence in the year 1932. The very date celebrates the inception of the IAF and pays homage to the men who have served within it. It is a proud moment to remember the long history of the air force from its germinating seeds in the early days to becoming one of the world's most powerful air forces. Indian Air Force Day is the day when the force celebrates a different theme in terms of the core message and objective every year.

The theme for 2024 is "Bharatiya Vayusena: Saksham, Sashakt aur Aatmnirbhar," which means "Potent, Powerful, and Self-Reliant." This theme focuses on the efforts of Indian Air Force toward making it modern and self - reliant. The theme symbolizes the continuity of air force's pursuit towards modernization as a force, where emphasis has been put on the upgradation of technology and hardware equipment attuned to International standards. Rafale fighter jets and indigenous aircraft like Tejas signify a shift toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing by the IAF.
