In a recent turn of events in the state of Punjab, the Indian Army has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of Agniveer soldier Amritpal Singh, who was laid to rest without the customary military honours. This decision was due to the nature of his passing, which the Army confirmed as a case of suicide.
Army's Statement and Policy
On October 15, the Indian Army issued an official statement, revealing that Amritpal Singh had taken his own life while on sentry duty. The absence of military honors at his funeral was attributed to the Army's longstanding policy of not giving such honours to individuals who succumb to self-inflicted injuries.
The statement emphasized that the Army's policy remains consistent for all soldiers, regardless of their enrollment date, reaffirming its commitment to treat all cases of suicide with deep empathy and respect. The military does not differentiate between soldiers who joined before or after the Agnipath scheme's implementation.
Support and Dignity During Difficult Times
The Army expressed the importance of prioritizing support and relief for the affected families, including immediate financial assistance for funeral arrangements. It acknowledged the weight of such losses on both the families and the Armed Forces as a whole and called on society to uphold the privacy, respect, and dignity of the grieving families.
The Army also reiterated its adherence to established policies and protocols, requesting support from all sections of society as it continues to follow its procedures.
Punjab Chief Minister's Response
Despite the Army's stance, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann asserted that his government's policy for honouring martyrs remains unwavering. Irrespective of the military's decision, the state government has pledged to provide Rs 10 million (approximately $120,000) to Amritpal Singh's family as a token of respect and support during this difficult time.
