Acid Attack: Woman sustains 15% burn injuries in Assam

A woman in Assam’s Sonitpur district was allegedly attacked with acid by a businessman, police said on Monday. She has sustained burn injuries in the attack, they said.

“Both, the accused and victim are known to each other. The accused, who is married, was in a relationship with the woman, who is unmarried. They also had some differences over money,” said Sushanta Biswa Sarma, superintendent of police (SP), Sonitpur.

Stop Acid Attack

Acid attacks, also known as corrosive substance attacks, are a form of violence in which a corrosive substance, such as sulfuric acid, is thrown or applied on the body of the victim with the intention of causing disfigurement or injury. These attacks are often motivated by revenge, jealousy, or a desire to control or dominate the victim. Acid attacks have been reported in many countries around the world, including India.

In Delhi, acid attacks have been a problem for many years. According to data from the Delhi Police, there were 369 reported acid attacks in the city between 2010 and 2014. However, it is believed that the actual number of acid attacks is much higher, as many victims may not report the attacks due to fear, shame, or a lack of knowledge about how to seek help.

Acid Attack

In 2013, the Indian government introduced stricter laws to punish those found guilty of acid attacks, including a ban on the sale of acid to minors and a requirement that acid sellers keep a record of all acid sales. Despite these efforts, acid attacks continue to occur in various parts of India.
