The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has released a controversial documentary examining the influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government in Australia. Journalist and anchor Avani Dias states that the documentary aims to "uncover the long arm of the Indian state here in Australia." Despite making sensational claims about attempts to interfere with Australia's national security, the documentary offers no concrete evidence to support these assertions.
Association with the RSS
The documentary opens with visuals of Prime Minister Modi following the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, quickly shifting focus to his longstanding association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The RSS is described as a "Hindu nationalist organisation," with Priya Chacko, Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide, characterizing it as a "far-right paramilitary organisation." She suggests that Modi underwent "paramilitary training and indoctrination" through his ties with the RSS.
Avani Dias, in her post on X (formerly Twitter), highlighted the documentary’s investigation into the Modi government's alleged infiltration in Australia, including previously undisclosed details about an Indian "nest of spies" expelled from the country.
Today, we're releasing our investigation into the Narendra Modi Government and his allies' infiltration in Australia, including never-before-revealed details about an Indian “nest of spies” that were asked to leave the country.https://t.co/8YMLmGHsp2— Avani Dias (@AvaniDias) June 17, 2024
Featuring Controversial Figures
The documentary, which critiques Prime Minister Modi, includes a segment on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, featuring controversial Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Pannun. It also addresses the issue of pro-Khalistani figures and claims to have spoken with individuals connected to the separatist movement in Australia.
Narendra Modi has ruled India for a decade and will continue his reign following this month’s election, but he does not tolerate some critics, the documentary's introduction on YouTube states. It alleges that Modi's government has been involved in foreign interference and the assassination of dissidents overseas, extending its reach into Australia.
This investigation reveals new details about the local 'nest of spies' previously disrupted by ASIO and meets the Australian residents who say they have been threatened by India’s authorities, according to ABC’s description of the episode, originally broadcast as ‘Infiltrating Australia’ on June 17, 2024.
