The Supreme Court of India denied Nirmal Singh Panesar's attempt to dissolve his six-decade marriage to Paramjit Kaur Panesar, 82, According to AFP.
Nirmal stated in legal filings submitted in 1984 that the couple's marriage had irretrievably broken down. According to the report, Paramjit refused to move to Chennai with him when he was transferred by the Indian Air Force that year.
In 1996, Nirmal filed for divorce, citing cruelty and abandonment. Despite the divorce being granted by a district court in 2000, Paramjit's appeal led to its reversal later that same year.
Despite conceding that their marriage was irretrievably broken, the Supreme Court rejected Nirmal's divorce petition after 20 years, it said.
The court's decision states that the institution of marriage continues to hold a sacred and significant emotional value as a vital connection between husband and wife in Indian society.
According to the judgement, approving the divorce would be unjust to Paramjit. She told the judge she didn't want to die with the "stigma" of being a divorcee, according to the report.
In addition, Paramjit assured the Supreme Court that she had made every effort to respect their "sacred relationship" and that she would continue to be willing to look after her husband as he ages. The couple has three children.
