4.0 magnitude earthquake shakes delhi, epicenter was 5 km deep, aftershocks probable

Strong tremors were felt across Delhi and its surrounding areas early this morning at 5:36 am following a 4.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the national capital. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the government agency responsible for monitoring earthquake activity in India, tremors were recorded across northern parts of the country, with Delhi identified as the epicentre. The earthquake originated at a shallow depth of just 5 km beneath the surface. Although the magnitude was relatively mild, the limited depth meant that the tremors were more widely felt.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to reassure citizens, urging them to remain calm and follow necessary safety precautions while staying vigilant for any potential aftershocks. In a post on X, he stated, “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.” The epicentre of the earthquake was located in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan, where several residents reported hearing a loud noise as the ground shook. Officials noted that this region has experienced minor earthquakes every two to three years, with a previous tremor of 3.3 magnitude recorded in 2015.

The strong tremors caused panic among residents, particularly those living in high-rise buildings across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, prompting many to rush outdoors in fear. The Delhi Police also addressed the situation through a post on X, reassuring residents with the message, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!” They also advised citizens to contact the emergency helpline 112 in case of any urgent need. Meanwhile, Ratanlal Sharma, a passenger waiting for his train at New Delhi railway station, described his experience of the tremor. “I was standing on the platform when I suddenly felt a strong jolt. It felt as if a train had come to a screeching halt,” he recalled.
